Calibra Ting the Compensa Tion Heat -pulse Technique for Measuring Sap Flow in Olive

چکیده
The compensation heat-pulse method, a technique for measuring sap f10w in plants, was caJibrated for the olive tree. Two calibration experiments were carried out, the excision and the perfusion experiments. A device was designed in our laboratory for the perfusion experiment, which allowed us to calibrate the technique for a range of 0.5 L h O ' to 14 L h" '. The correction factors given by Green and Clothier (1988) for a 2.0 mm wound diameter were found to be valid for the olive tree, except when the tree suffered from significant water stress.

Calibration of sap flow estimated by the compensation heat pulse method in olive, plum and orange trees: relationships with xylem anatomy.
The compensation heat pulse method is widely used to estimate sap flow in conducting organs of woody plants. Being an invasive technique, calibration is crucial to derive correction factors for accurately estimating the sap flow value from the measured heat pulse velocity. We compared the results of excision and perfusion calibration experiments made with mature olive (Olea europaea L. 'Manzani...

The compensation heat pulse (CHP) method is widely used to estimate sap flow and transpiration in conducting organs of woody plants. Previous studies have reported a natural azimuthal variability in sap flow, which could have practical implications in locating the CHP probes and integrating their output. Sap flow of several olive trees (Olea europaea L. cv. 'Arbequina') previously grown under d...
متن کاملEvaluation of the heat pulse velocity method for measuring sap flow in Pinus patula
Information on the water use of Pinus patula plantations is required to predict the impact of forest plantations on water resources in South Africa. The heat pulse velocity (HPV) method is a promising technique for measuring water use by trees, and has been shown to measure sap flows accurately in a variety of hardwood trees. This method has not been sufficiently verified for pine trees where t...
متن کاملAn alternative method to estimate zero flow temperature differences for Granier's thermal dissipation technique.
Calibration of the Granier thermal dissipation technique for measuring stem sap flow in trees requires determination of the temperature difference (DeltaT) between a heated and an unheated probe when sap flow is zero (DeltaT(max)). Classically, DeltaT(max) has been estimated from the maximum predawn DeltaT, assuming that sap flow is negligible at nighttime. However, because sap flow may continu...
متن کاملVariability with xylem depth in sap flow in trunks and branches of mature olive trees.
Knowledge of sap flow variability in tree trunks is important for up-scaling transpiration from the measuring point to the whole-tree and stand levels. Natural variability in sap flow, both radial and circumferential, was studied in the trunks and branches of mature olive trees (Olea europea L., cv Coratina) by the heat field deformation method using multi-point sensors. Sapwood depth ranged fr...
